CANNED FISH MERGER.

Statistics of the Canadian salmon pack last season, published by the Bank of Nova Scotia, show a notable decline, from 2,065,000 cases in 1926 to 1,361,000 cases in 1927, The decrease occurred chiefly in the pack of pinks and chums. The pack of sockeye salmon, which is the choice variety, did not decline seriously. Stabilisation on a properous basis of the fishing industry on the Pacific Coast of Canada is expected to result from amalgamation of the British Columbia Fishing and Packing Co., Ltd., and the Gosse Packing Co., Ltd. This will be accomplished through the formation of a parent company to hold their common stocks, to be known as the British Columbia Packers, Ltd., according to official reports, the merger means the creation of an 8,000,000 dollar concern, bringipg together the 5,000,000 dollar. B.C. Fishing and Packing Co., largest canners of salmon in the British Empire and operators, in British Columbia for over thirty years, and the'2,ooo,----000 dollar Gosse Packing Co.,'second largest packing firm in the province, formed fifteen years ago. The amalgamation of interests is considered to be of a decidedly constructive nature, and advantageous to both companies, whose goods are well known iv New Zealand.
