STATE ADVANCES

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I am not anxious to take up any more of your space than possible, but should be obliged if you would publish a reply to your correspondent, H. K. Heivson. This correspondent has undoubtedly supplied the ■ final proof (if same were needed) that the State Advances Office has for some time been granting loans within two or three months to purchasers of Government sections, and it would be interesting to hear the Department's explanation of this, in view of the fact that it- has publicly denied this, asserting that this policy was only adhered to in the most necessitous cases. .Regarding your, correspondent's remarks that this method is "businesslike," all I can say is why has the Department so strenuously denied same and given applicants to understand that all were treated alike. I was under the impression that the State Advances Department was there to assist all workers to obtain their own home by the granting of Government loans, and not in exactly the same capacity as a private company,'as your corrcsponden^ would have. In auy case, it is only in the last year or so that Government .sections have been on the market to any extent, and I personally was hot aware of Government sections for sale when I bought mine. Had your correspondent been in my position instead of his own, I venture to say he would have been one of tho first to complain.—l am, A. WORKER.
