ELLERSLIE MEETING

COMMENT ON TRACK WORK - (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. „ A soaking rain fell hero on Sunday, and with a further fall to-day, the tracks at Ellerslie are now very heavy. There is a likelihood of more rain before the opening of the Auckland Winter Meeting on Saturday, and the usual winter conditions can be anticipated. All is not woll with Porlo do Leon. Tho joint of his off'foreleg has filled, and he was an absentee from the track .yesterday morning. Everything is being done to get the Polydamoh gelding to tho post for the Great Northern Hurdles, but a stoppage in his work at this stage will not improve his chance. • Two good schooling efforts since arriving at Ellorsljo have brought Mister Gamp into ind-cascd favour for the Great Northern Hurdles. . His display yesterday \ras impressive, as, in addition to jumping very well, ho waa going strongly at the end. What beats Mister Gamp should win. : Aberfeldy has not impressed the track watchers here,' although- his exhibition over live hurdles with Mister Gamp was quite good for speed and junking ability. Aberfeldy should be able to hold his own in the Great .Northern Hurdles. What may be his greatest trouble will bo tho .length of tho journey, as there are doubts about his stamina. > Wedding March has not arrived at tho time of writing, and may not bo here until Thursday. Cambridge reports credit him with being in great heart. One of tho latest arrivals is Mia Bella. She was schooled yesterday, but did not impress. Mia Bella is fancied in. some quarters for the Great Northern Hurdles, but the journey may trouble her. There is no disposition to . fancy Eoyal Form for the Great Northern Hurdles, as he is believed to be in need of a little racing. He is carrying a bright appearance, and has schooled twice lately.. W. J. Bowden will be his pilot, so he should lose nothing on tho score of horsemanship. Two good displays over tho steeplechase fences hero encourage the belief that Comical may yet win a steeplechase. The big fellow is fencing with more confidence, and in his latest "school" went better than' Brigadier Bill, who was inclined to dwell at the fences. The distance of the Great Northern Steeplechase is likely to trouble Comical, but with a continuation of improvement in his jumping a shorter steeplechase should be within his roach. ' ,' ■ I All that has been asked of Glendowie has been accomplished in pleasing fashion. This young 'chaser is undoubted- • ly good, but I doubt whether he is quite seasoned enough for a hard race like tho Great Northern Steeplechase, although he promises to go well. The more Beau Cavalier is schooled the better he pleases his admirers. His two latest exhibitions over the country have been characterised by great dash alnd delightful foncing. He is to tackle the double. S. Henderson will be his pilot in tho Hurdles, and J. S. M'Bac will bo aboard in.the Steeplechase. , The Chesterfield gelding is in great heart and with-all his weight will have to be beaten'in'the Steeplechase.
