(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 28th May. At the monthly meeting of the, Nelson Education Board held to-day, Mr. 'P. W. O. Smith (chairman) made feeling reference to the death of Mr. J. Treacher, who had been a member of the board for many years. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed, and an appreciation of his services was placed 'on the records.. The Nelson Amateur Operatic ' Society has just completed arrangements for producing the "Belle of New York" next October. Rehearsals are to start immediately. The cost of producing the opera will be' heavier tlian that of any,former production, and the society looks for the generous support of the public. It was mentioned in the annual report presented to the Nelson Education Board to-day'that the number, of pupils on the rolls at the end of December was 7240, a decrease of over 70 from the previous year. The average attendance was 6464. There are 139 schools and four side schools in operation. ■ It was also mentioned that there were 249 adult teachers, excluding relieving teachers, in the employ of the board. Of these 205 were certificated. Two business premises in Nelson were visited by burglars during the week-end. The shop of Mrs. H. Walker in Bridge street, was entered on Saturday night, and sweets and chocolate stolen, while Mrs. Walker was in the rear of the premises. Webster's grocery store, in Bridge street, was likewise > entered, and goods to the value of £8 were stolen. A heavy ground and bitterly cold wind for the interprovincial hockey match, Canterbury v. Nelson, at Christchurch, made conditions anything but pleasant for both players and spectators. After a clean, fast game Canterbury came off winners by 5 goals to 3. The Nelson team returns today. 'Mrs. W. M. Moncrieff is to lecture before the Nelson Philosophical Society oh Wednesday evening, her subject being the' history of the "Great Crested Grebe." Mrs. Moncrieff is recognised as an authority on matters pertaining to birds and bird life, and the lecture should prove interesting and entertaining. . - The launch which was sunk last Tuesday morning in a collision just outside Nelson. Harbour, when the youth Galey was drowned, was recovered this morning by the pilot launch and Harbour Board punt. The launch was struck about four feet from the stern, her side being stove in, and the engine and gear shifted. Active operations on the erection of the New Majestic Theatre have started. It is hoped that the theatre will be ready before Christinas. A challenge rifle match was fired on the Woodstock range on Saturday between teams from Korere and Woodstock. The shooting throughout was fair, but conditions; in the morning wei'e bad, owing to the targets being in the shade: J. Greenwood put up a very creditable score of 97 for^Woodstock, and the Woodstock team won by 56 points: • % Professor Easterfield left for Wellington by to-night's boat. - The Hon. W. W. Snodgrass was also a passenger.
