AWAITING A REPLY

The question of unemployment was. discussed at a recent meeting of the Civic League, two phases, of the subject being dealt with —that relating to provision for general relief or those out of work, and the special and most difficult problem of dealing with those of the^ unemployed who arc not fitted for ordinary manua! occupations. The secretary of the league (-Mr. D. M'Larcn) stated to-day that the latter subject was earnestly put before the meeting by one of the members who is endeavouring to evolve a special scheme of assistance. By direction of the meeting, the officers of the league Waited on the_Mayor and discussed with him what provision should be made for the employment of distressed mer this year. Later the chairman of the "Works Committee of the City Council was also consulted. "Wo were given to understand," said Mr, M'Laren, "that a list of work had. been compiled, and thai: preparations were being made so that men could be put on to these, after certain negotiations willi the Government we it completed. that it would be 'more difficult to raise funds by voluntary contribution this year than last year. We had, however, to assure tho Mayor that whatever was done in any 'direction, the league would bo ready to fully co-op-erate towards the assistance of those who are unfortunately out of employment. In consequence of tho statement made by tho Mayor, wo are now awaiting a settlement between him and the Prime Minister before taking any further action. Our officers meanwhile have done something towards placing somo men in work, by making recommendations to employers both in tho city and outside it."
