HOSPITAL LEVIES
AUCKLAND DISCUSSION (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The Auckland local bodies are to hold a conference to discuss hospital levies. When the subject was introduced at last night 'a meeting of the/Mount Eden Borough, Mr. D. C. Fraser said: "We .'should enter a protest, as the present system is over the odds, and means giving the Hospital Board an open cheque. It is time a stand was taken." The Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter):."Can you make any suggestion? The population is growing." Mr. Fraser:! ''If it grows at the rate of contributions we ought to have a population of half a million." Mr. Potter: "Would you suggest the Government taking over the hospital boards?'-' A member: "They run the mental .hospitals all right." Mr. Potter: "But you can't .compare the two. The Auckland Hospital 'is still overcrowded, and more accommodation must be found. There is a hospital population of 240,000 to look after, and the annual expenditure is £250,000. Ido not see any way of departing from the present system of local body contributions for the cost, of upkeep." ' _^
