AT AMBERLEY

ROTOR WINS BIG EVENT AMBERLEY HANDICAP TO - ZARAGOZA

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, 26th May. Glorious weather favoured the Amberley Racing Club for the annual race meeting, and"there"was a large attendance. The racing was full of interest and there were some good finishes. The defeat of Battle Colours in the chief event was a severe blow to backers. He was going well for six furlongs, but after that he seemed unable to pull out the extra effort, aud he -was well beaten before the straight was reached. BRACKENFIELD HURDLES. Proceedings opened with the Brackenfield Hurdle Handicap, for which the live acceptors lined up. Royal Land was a warm favourite, with Oriflamb the only other horse seriously supported. Heisler was first to show out with Oriflamb, Rangiawhio, Royal Land, and Tarleton following in that order. After going half a mile Oriflamb joined Heisler in the lead, with Royal Land a' few lengths away. Oriflamb drew clear of Heisler at the seven-furlong post, but a little further on they were together again, four lengths in front of Royal Land, with Tarleton next. Three furlongs frirm home Heisler was two lengths in front of Oriflamb, while Royal Land was commencing to close up ithe gap.. Heisler had a slight advantage at the entrance to the straight, and he beat Oriflamb comfortably by two lengths. Royal Land was two lengths away, with Rangiawhio six lengths further back,'well clear of Tarleton. The winner was always going well, and always held the advantage over the last two furlongs. Oriflamb did not stay out the last part so Well as was expected, but he will improve. Royal Land was giving away a long start at. half the journey, and -could make no impression on the leaders at the finish. NOVICE .STAKES. Scratehings were heavy in the Novice Stakes, and, though there were twenty-one horses in the book, only niue lined up. Solgele aud Greylinch disputed favouritism/the former winding up with a slight call.-. It,,was., good picking, as they had the finish to themselves. Solgele, as usual, began smartly, followed by while Scrambler, Despot, and Bon Raid were next. After going about two furlongs Solgele opened out a gap of three furlongs from Greyfinch, who had Scrambler in close attendance. Solgele had a good lead at the entrance to the straight. He tired badly over the last furlong, but lasted long enough to stall off Greyfinch's challenge by a short half-length. Merival who came with a rattle in the straight, was two lengths away third, beating Scrambler by half a length, while Despot was only a neck further back. Then came Sarnia and Star Raid, with Bon Raid next and Gay Crest last.. The winner has plenty of speed, but ha only struggled to the end of five furlongs. Gay Crest ran badly. , Sarnia put up a good performance after losing a lot of ground at the start. ■ - STARKY MEMORIAL HANDICAP. Tho G. B. Starky Memorial' Handicap attracted the eleven acceptors. , They made up,.one of the best fields seen on the course, and they provided a great contest. Battle Colours was a hot favourite, carrying nearly three times as much as Rotor, who was second choice. Moratorium, Amor, and Rotor were Jhe early leaders, and at the end of two furlongs they were showing the way to Battle Colours and Thorndale, while Killoch brought up the rear. Bronstell moved up as they left the straight, and at the seven furlongs post he joined Amor in the lead, with Moratorium and Rotor next, just clear of Battle Colours and Thorndale. Half a mile from home Fresco made a forward move, and a , little further on Battle Colours commenced to drop back. Bronstell retired at the home turn, Rotor joining Amor iv tho lead, with Moratorium heading the others. Once in the straight Rotor drew clear, and, finishing on strongly, he won decisively by a length from Moratorium, who, headed Amor in the last stride. Sir Roy, wlio was running on at the end, was only a neck away. Thorndale, Fresco, and Steel Bar were next, .while Battle Colours was last. Rotor has run some good races among the hacks, and. he demonstrated in this race that he is not out of place in open company. He stayed on well, and he will win better stakes later on. Battle Colours was-a disappointment. He seemed to bo going easily along the back, but he stopped very quickly. KOWAI TROTThe field'for the if.owai Trot Handicap numbered twenty-one. All. but seven of them were on the limit, and the starter did exceptionally well to get most of them off well. No Fear was first to show out, with Grandlight, Awaiti, and Prompter prominent in the bunch just behind her. There was no change at the end of half a mile, where Loburn joined in. A little further on No Fear retired, Grandlight going on from Prompter and Awaiti, while Little Author and Becky Mine headed the others, with Liberty Hall and Mussoliui moving up. Prompter was done with half a mile from home, and for the remainder of the journey Grandlight and Awaiti had the race to themselves. They were together at the entrarice to the straight, but Awaiti on the outside stayed on too well for his young rival, whom he beat by two lengths. Mussolini was six lengths away, with Liberty Hall close up, while Little Author, His Lordship. Bingen Patch, and Becky Mine followed at intervals. The winner raced a solid race, and he will improve. Grandlight gave further evidence that he is a good two-year-old. Mussolini lost a lot of ground at the start, but went well after he got going. SEADOWN HACK HANDICAP. The scratching of Despot left seven runners for the Seadown Hack Handicap. It was a good betting race, witli Waihemo always favourite. Lytup and Waihemo were smartest out, with Sea Gay and Skyquest next, but at the end of two furlongs Claymore joined Waihemo in the lead. They raced like this to the home turn, when Claymore retired, Waihemo showing the way with Solfello next, having put in a fine run after getting oil' badly. Thurso also made his ell'ort at this stage, and he followed the leading pair to the straight. Waihemo was goin^ along comfortably in front, and he won easily by two lengths from Solfello, who stalled off Thurso's challenge by a neck, while Lytup was only a length away fourth. The winner has been gradually improving, and he may make a useful horse next

season. Solfello ran a good race considering the ground he lost through a slow start. AMBERLEY HANDICAP. Sir Hoy and Mime were withdrawn from the Ainborley Handicap, aiid in a field of six Gold Mint was a little better backed than Zaragoza. When the barrier rose Gold Mint was a trifle slaw, but the others raced in line for a hundred 'yards, when Sagittarius drew clear, with Polydectes, Sprinkler, and Zaragoza next. Zaragoza took third place half a mile from home, and there was no further change till the straight was reached, when Polydectes dropped out, while Gold Mint commenced a strong run. Zaragoza and Sagittarius led into the straight. Then Zaragoza' drew clear; but she had to be ridden out to beat Gold Mint by a head. Sprinkler was two lengths away, with Sagittarius fourth,, stopping over the last • furlong. Zaragoza showed useful form, but Gold Mint ran another good race, suggestive of an early win. GLASNEVIN HACK HANDICAP. The nine acceptors lined up for the Glasnevin Hack Handicap. Malmsey was a strong favourite, with Lancer and Amor the only others seriously supported. Page Boy was chopped out at the start, and Amor and Atone showed the way to Solfello for a furlong, when Atone drew out from Amor with Solfello. handy and Malmsey next. Page Boy showed a lot of speed when ho got going, and at the end of two furlongs he was alongside Malmsey. Half a mile from home Solfello joined Atone in the lead, with Amor and Malmsey not far behind. Racing for the straight Solfello, Amor, and Atone were in line, but Solfollo lost some ground through going wide. Amor had Atone beaten a little further on. Then Malmsey appeared on the scene. She was being ridden hard up to a hundred yards from the post, but after that she came on to win decisively by a length from Amor. T\Vo lengths away came Atone, who just stalled off Lancer's date run.. Malmsey stayed too well for her opponents. Lancer seemed unable to act in the going, and never showed up till, the straight was reached. TEVIOTDALE TROT. The concluding event, tire Teviotdale Trot Handicap, saw eighteen horses at the post. The Halswell Park-Money more bracket was a little better backed than Danny Boy, while Golden Author and Teramoe were also well supported. Liberty Hall, Moneymore, Kaneiri, and Teramoe comprised the leading division at the end of a furlong, but .after going half a mile Teramoe broke badly. Kanieri then went on from Moneymore and Liberty Hall, while Lightfoot ran into fourth place, with Routine and Danny Boy next. When a mile had been covered Lightfoot and Liberty Hall w^re showing the way four, lengths in front of Moneymore and Kanieri, while Danny Boy and Routine were next. Liberty Hall was in trouble sis furlongs from home, and a little further on Lightfoot had Moneymore and Danny Boy as his nearest attendants. Danny Boy followed Lightfoot round the home turn, anil the pair commenced to draw away from Moneymore. Once _in the straight, Danny Boy joined Lightfoot, whom he beat decisively by two lengths. Harry Locandai who came with a late run, was six lengths away, just cutting Moneymore out of third place, while the others were strung out. * . Danny Boy has been an expensive horse to his admirers, but he paced a sound race on this occasion, staying on well. It was his staminethat enabled him to beat Lightfoot.
