THE SURPRISE OF .THE DAY.

The match between Marist University at Newtown Park did*not proyide much in the way of classy Rugby for the 300 spectators,"- Marist won by S points to 3, and the victory was deserved. The students had one of their offdays, and the solid Marist side played more like a team. University were beaten for the ball in the scrums and the backs were starved, but even- when their rearguard did get possession they lost the advantage. by ill-judged- kicking. The Marist kicking on the other1 hand was accurate, and the line finding on defence frustrated the .opposition. The teams, were:— Marist. —Cuming; G. Barry, Broderick, Graham; Johnson, Fitzgerald; Bourke, Dennehy, Ottaway, M'Donald, E. Barry; M'Hardy, Jones, Butler, Keary. University.—Noble-Adams; Brown, Williams, Foden; Irwin, Mackenzie; Leys; Hislop, Childs, Blacker, Blakcney, Cormack, O'Kegau, Grant, Diedrich. University kicked oft' against the sun and the Marist forwards soon showed superiority in getting the ball from the scrum. Williams let Broderick through in a Marist passing rush, but Graham dropped a pass when he had a clear run in. Twice Mackenzie fooled ,the Marist five-eighths, and on the second occasion Irwin lost a try through dropping a pass. Cormack missed an easy penalty in front of the goal. The Marist forwards broke away, and the backs in turn took up'the attaok. Broderick was nun into position by Fitzgerald, and he streaked through: Cuming failed to convert.' MarJ ist 3, University 0. Coi'mack1 missed another easy kick from a penalty a. few' minutes afterwards, and then again' the Marisfc forwards broke away. Bad handling by the student backs gave the side a few anxious moments, but Noble-Adams cleared, .and play swung back. O'Regan failed to put over a penalty, and'Marist forced.' The Marist. pack went.away, and i just on half-time Johnston kicked a line penalty goal, making the scores: Marist 6, University 0. . .....-' The University forwards showed up well' an the loose on resumption, but sound dc fence kept them at bay. ' However, offside play resulted in O'Kegan goa-ling. Marist G, University 3. Marist ' were j now getting the ball from the scrum with monotonous regularity, and both Fitzgerald and Bourke were finding the line with, splendid kicks. Mackenzie made a good opening, and Irwin carried on, but Williams -kicked instead of running. Guining returned the kick well down the field, and even forward play ensued''for some time. There was a lack of finish inthc passing rushes of both sides, and this was one of the factors accounting for the game ending without further score. Mr. G. Bradley was the referee.
