, ♦ I CONFERENCE REMITS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCAIIGILL, 25th May. The annual provincial conference of the Southland branch of the Farmers' Union was held to-day, Mr. D. Dickie (Gore) being elected president. The report and balance-sheet showed the branch to be in a thoroughly sound position, both as regards finance and membership. Among the remits adopted were the following:—"That the union urge adherence to the present system of land tax; a fairer distribution of the petrol tax; demanding that the • Daylight ' Savings Act be not replaced on the btatute Book; condemning the flat tax on motor vehicles; supporting an amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act so that farmers ' carting their own produce were exempted from having to pay heavy traffic licenses; requesting the Government to remove- the duty of £1 on cement; urging' the Government to paBS legislation to control the rate of interest at a figure which would bring the individual borrower into line in an equality of service to the State; protesting against the price of superphosphate in the South Island; urging the Meat Board to take the necessary steps to have all lamb and mutton leaving New Zealand carry one brand; stating that the Arbitration Court Act was arbitrary in its application, unjust m principle, and that in the interest of farmers generally it should be amended; recommending that no teacher be appointed in charge of a school -without having served at least one year under a thoroughly qualified head teacher; suggesting that the Government be asked to remove protective duties from all industries that had been established ten years in this country; and affirming the principle of ■ Legislature working for Free Trade within the Empire.
