AN AMERICAN'S ADVICE ''■ Proper lubrication of an..automobile,; is'figured in minutes and ponce, while' replacement of bearings is a matter of hours and. pounds, according to Mr. L. C. Shaw, of the. service department, of, the United States National Automobile Club. Remember, also, that a .gallon of oil costs- less than an hour of mechanic's time, urges Mr.'Shaw, whose list of rules for the lubrication of an automobile engine follows/ including tips for the winter season: — 4 1. Do not wait until there is a squeak before beginning Jo lubricate. Squeaks mean dry or dirty bearings. 2. Never.race a cold .engine, but use an oil that will flow ' freely in . cold weather. . Perfect lubrication cannot occur with extremely heavy-bodied oil in cold weather. 3. See that the engine is kept clean, always, ancl that the air, fuel, and oil cleaners are inspected regularly. 4. While driving keep an eye on the oil gauge for , possible failure of the lubricating system. 5. Change the oil at regular intervals. During the wintcroil in the averago engine, should be 'changed everjr 500 -miles. If there is an oil filter, 1000' miles. ■ ' 6. Keep the crankease filled-to proper level with a grade recommended by tire company from which you buy your oil. Never'fill beyond the. proper level,1 as that will make the engine slow moving. ' . . ' ' 7. Bather than expect a heavier oil to correct such defects as Jooso bearings and piston fits in an old engine have the motor repaired.- »' 8. Never drive a new car at a fast rate of speed or allow it to overheat. By keeping these rules.in mind the motorist will find' that most of his lubricating, troubles have vanished, and • that less bother, less expense for repair, and more enjoyable motoring will result. , ' :
