BAIL REFUSED
- FORGING AND UTTERING .. Two charges.of forging cheques for £10 and.two charges of uttering them .wercr made against John ..Briton Clark, aged 30, in- the Magistrate's Court yesterday afterno.on, before Mr. 33. Page, S.M. .-" . Evidence was given by Martha Gustofson, licensee of the Post Office Hotel, and Thomas Coltman, licensee of tho Grand Hotel, that they cashed v the cheques,for the accused and afterwards found that .they were valueless. Coltman, added that the accused said he had just come out of hospital and wanted the money immediately as ho was leaving town. ■Acting-Detective Kearney produced a statement in which the accused admitted the four offences," and said that he had obtained the blank cheques from the bank by representing tlmt he had aii . account at one of tho bank's branches. A' plea of guilty was entered, and the accused; for whom Mr. W. E. Leicester acted, was committed to the Supreme •Court for sentence. Bail was refused. The hearing of a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on, probation was deferred until after the accused'was dealt with at the Supremo Court. '
