GREEN DIAMOND
' discovery in Sydney siibp (From "This Post's" Representative.) SYDNEY, 17th May. Most people'find a fascination in gazing, into the windows of second-hand shops. Perhaps they have a vague idea that some-day they may alight upon something of reaL value which can'be secured at a bargain price. If so, their curiosity is bound to be increased as the result of a valuable "fiind" in, Sydney a few days' ago. A rare gem, a, green diamond, of which there aro only two or three in existence in the world, was discovered in' romantic circumstances and is now in tho possession of ono of the leading1 jewellers. , Some time ago a representative of Angus and Coots, 'Ltd., chanced to look in the" window of a second-hand jewellery shop when he noticed an antique ring, set with four stones, apparently emeralds and rubies, for which the sum of 15s was asked. On his return to t.he office he mentioned, the ring to Mr. Coote, who recommended its immediate purchase. By the style of the setting it was estimated hat th» ring was very old, probably fifty years. It was noticed) too, that ono of the omoralds scintillated from every angle, whereas the other was comparatively dull. An examination proved to Mr. Coote that he had acquired an oxceedingly rare gem. To verify his own results, and at the same time satisfy the sceptics, the stone was .'submitted, to Professor-Vonwiller at the University. According to the professor the stone satisfied the diamond test, and was undoubtedly a diamond. Although the diamond is'very small, it weighs slightly under half a carat, its valuo is about £200. An ordinary diamond of the same weight^aud of'the finest quality would bo worth about £50. "It is not unusual to find a diamond tinged with green," Mr. Coote said, "but the discovery of a diamond possessing a perfect emerald colour is an' extremely rare occurrence." j
