COLOURED TABLE-CLOTHS
The introduction , of. the- coloured tablecloth has made for much greater variety in meals and all that pertains to them than was possible with the mere effect, of wldte, glass and silver, .states "an English writer. .A yellow cloth for a breakfast table has'a pleasing, cheerful offect, especially if it is chosen with some regard to-tlic-break-fast set. Similarly,-cloths used at; teatime, or for the tray, make ail immense difference to the cheerfulness of the meal. The coloured coffee-cup is very much on the increase, and tho tendency is to make this a very, bright spot 'in the room. Coffee-cups are being made with bright orange, purple, or - green designs, and they are often set out ; ou a shiny black tray with no ■cloth in order to. throw up their. cplpurijig. On the other hand," cor^ee;cups -in fill-white china .may haye ; an.appJegroo'n cloth as a background, orhiarigold colour may be used to make" a' gorgeous contrast with red. No colouring matters as long as it succeeds .and ad long as 'it is as bright as possible. For tea, cloths tend to be worked so that they tone in with the pattern of tho china. Very charming Chinese cloths can be used here and, delicately in a sort of cross-stitch, they can: be chosen to suit tho teaset With some.exactitude. The quality of Chin-' eso Jinen helps a good deal towards the success of this colour combination. A very successful arrangement can bo made where china of a mellow white is used. Some of the Wedgwood teasets look particularly well in this con- , nection. The cloth is matched exactly ; to the tone of the china, and with butter and perhaps even yellow jam to set them off they look charming together. While hemstitching is a good deal used, colour and tone have almost superseded old drawn-thread work.-
