LOSS OF LIFE IN DISASTER- ' I . Australian Press Association. (Received 24th May, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK? 23 rd May. A message from Mather, Pennsylvania, the scene of a tragic colliery explosion, states that the authorities have abandoned all hope of rescuing any more of the entombed miners alive. It is finally' estimated that the number of dead is 197. The bodies of 164 of these have now: been recovered and 33 are still unaccounted for, but more bodies aro being discovered hourly. Some of these are still limp and warm, and indicate that tiie miners lived many hours after entombment.
