AMERICAN TARIFF WALLS.
Nothing less than a ban on imports from America was suggested by Mr. T. B. Humphries in his presidential address to the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce. He said that the economic salvation of Europe! depended upon the nation's seeing the foolishness.of restricting inter-European trade by tariffs.A Europe united on this question could, and probably would, do without American products, except in so far as America lowered or abolished her tariff walls. As America had taken steps to prevent the rest "of the world earning more from her, he went on, then it followed that the only way we could repay what we owed was to reduce our expenditure on her exports.,.,"! do not merely .• suggest a tariff, but the absolute prohibition of the importation of such things as American motor-cars, for which we have sold our birthright," said Mr. Humphries. "Until America is prepared to take payment in goods for the goods she -supplies, it is a disgrace for a Britisher to have or to use anything American which can be purchased elsewhere. Our motto should be, 'Buy from those who buy from us.'"
