Tho Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. J. Rolleston) will leave to-night for Christchurch, where, in company with the Right Hon. Sir Francis Bell, he will represent the Government at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Christchurch City Council. The Minister will also visit Paparoa Prison and Wigram Aerodrome. He will return to Wellington early next week. The Hon. B. Scott, M.L.C., was a passenger on the Maheno from Lyttelton last night. Mr. D.1 Sullivan, M.P., arrived in Wellington this morning from tho South. . . _ Major T. J. King returned to Wellington from the South this morning. A Press ; Association telegram from New Plymouth reports that the death occurred yesterday of Mr. James Rutherford, father of Sir Ernist Rutherford, at tho age of 89 years. Mr. Joseph Batchelar was yesterday re-elected chairman of the Kairanga County Council, and Mr. A. Campbell was reelected chairman of the Oroua , County Council. * ■ ' . Mr. E. Windley was re-elected chrf.rman of the Makara County Council at the annual meeting yesterday. Mr, Windley is entering on his seventh successive year as chairman of the council. At the last meeting of the council of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce regret was expressed at the loss by death of Hon. Li Kwang Heng, Consul for the Republic of China. The latoi Mr. Li' had been resident in Wellington' for Over seven years, and had been an honoured guest at some of tho chamber's annual functions.* Mr. D. R. Hoggard was elected chairman of the Hutt County Council at tho annual meeting yesterday. The retiring chairman (Mr. S. Blackley) thanked the councillors for the manner in which they had supported him during the past year, and also tho County Clerk (Mr. MacPherson) and his staff for the way in which they had carried out .their duties. ' i Mr. F. W. Alckin was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme dourt yesterday by his Honour Mr. Justice Ostler,, on the motion of Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell. Reference to __io death in Sydney recently of Mr. E. Hughes, an ex-New1 Zealand Rugby football representative, was made at last night's meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union's .Management Committee. A vote of sympathy with the late player's family was passed. Mr. J. A. Bond, an artist who is a New Zealander but who claims'no on. place as his abode because for many years ho has had no settled abode, is camping at Plimnierton in the courso of a tour of New Zealand. Mr. Bond is* a confirmed tourist, and travels almost constantly in South Africa smd' Australia.
