A carpenter, Frederick Hunt Hardgrave, aged 29, w*ho pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to-day to the theft of a gold chain and locket, of a value of £6, the property of Alice Merry, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Chief-Detective Ward said that Hardgrave was employed by the owner of the property when she was moving from one house to another. The owner left the house on the night of 19th May. Some of the windows were not locked, and when she returned the next morning she found that a small sum of money and the chain and locket had been taken. The accused was searched yesterday by detectives, and the chain and locket were recovered. Hardgrave, who had been before the Court frequently for dishonesty, denied taking the money.
