PUPILS TRANSFERRED

(To the Editor.) Sir,— Having read the report o£ the meeting of parents held in connection with the transference of pupils from Wil; ford school, f feel it incumbent on me to correct one statement made at tho meeting, viz., that the Petone Central school was overcrowded, as shown by the fact that two classes were accommodated at tho Petone Technical School building. As a matter of fact there is only one class there, and the position is this: The Petone Technical School building was for many years part of what was then known, as the Petone District High School, and what is now known as the Petone Central School. When the Hutt Valley High School was opened, the secondary pupils who occupied the technical school building were transferred to that school, and the rooms formerly occupied by them were left vacant. Tho Wellington Education Board and the Education Department have raised no objection to my continuing to make use of these rooms, since during the day they are not required for any other purpose and their use enables mo to effect a better organisation than would otherwise be possible. I " think tho view taken by the board and the Department is a reasonable one, and I do not think the fact of my use of the rooms should be seized upon to prove thnt my school ia overcrowded. As a matter of fact, I could accommodate a hundred more pupils and still be in a better position than many schools in the district. The matter of accommodation at the Wilford school is, of course, no concern of mine; but the committee of that scho^J must not misrepresent the position at my school in order to make good their case. —I am, etc., DOUGLAS BEDINGFIELD, Headmaster, Petone Central School.
