AT ELLERSLIE

DAMAEIS WINS THE OAKS EASTER TO IN THE SHADE - (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, 7th April. The Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting opened at Ellerslie on Saturday in tine weather. A large crowd attended. The totalisator receipts were £86,756 10s, .compared with £81,1)97 10s last year. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Thirteen started iv the President's Handicap, and Satrap was made a hot favourite, being over twice as well backed as the.second choice (Mandane). The eventual winner, Mask, was fourth choice at a nico price. Le Choucas, Papatu, and Mask were the iirst to single out, and along the back they were joined by (Jorinax and Queen Arch. Corinax took charge at the live-furlong post, and led into the straight from Papatu, Queen Arch, Le Ghouuas, Mask, and Satrap. In a great finish Mask got home by half a length from Papatu,-who. beat' Town Bank by a neck. Mandane came from a long way back and finished fourth in front of Satrap, Hipo, and Queen Arch. Mask is at his best again, while Papatu and Town Bank are coming on quickly. Satrap made a good showing, and Princess Ronnie should soon do better. Corinax bled, GREAT NORTHERN OAKS. There were sis vunuers in the Great Northern Oaks, Damaris being a good favourite, with the runner-up (Auriculus) the outsider of the field. Ti Tree took charge quickly and led past the stand, four lengths clear of Auriculus, with Miss Mercia and Damaris next. Damaris ran up to second place along the back, and went to the front at the end of a mile. Near tho distance Atmculus ami Ti Tree made efforts, but Damaris went away and won very easily from Auriculus, who beat Ti Tree by v head. Damaris showed undoubted -superiority in a moderate field. Sectional times were: Four furlongs, 52 2-flsee; mile, lmin 47 sec; and last four furlongs, 49 3-ssce. BRIGHTON HURDLES. Tho Brighton Hurdles was a bood betting ru.ee, with Wedding March, Archibald, and Lady Spalpeen all heavily backed. Mia Bella led to the iirst fence, and then a little further on Archibald and Kawa took charge. Potoanui assumed command at the fourth fence and led past the stand, several lengths clear o£ Archibald, Lady Spalpeen, and Kawa, with Ilevel sixth and Wedding March last. Along the back Lady Spalpeen closed on T'otoanui, while Archibald made a bad jump and lost several lengths. Four furlongs from home Poloanui was a couple of lengths clear of Lady. Spalpeen, with Kawa, Revel, and Wedding March next. At this stage Kevel was interfered with by Archibald, and at tho homo turn the order was Potoanui, Lady Spalpeen, Kawa, Wedding March, and Revel. Wedding March came on the scene at the last fence, and prevailed in the run home by a length from Revel, who defeated Potoanui by a neck..' Lady Spalpeen was fourth, with the others well beaten. The winner was splendidly handled, whereas Eevel was not ridden to the best. advantage. Potoanui, who was made a Hot of use of, and Lady Spalpeen went splendid races. EASTER HANDICAP. There .was a big boil-over in the Easter Handicap, an outsider, In the Shade, getting home and returning a large dividend. .Toy King was favourite, with Bright Glow .i good second and Awarere third in demand. Laughing Prince began best, but soon gave way to Awarere and Ballymoy 11., who were the leaders along the back from Paganelli, Nancy Lee, Great Charter, Bright Glow, and Lysander. There was not much change in the leading positions at the half-mile, although Valkou moved up to sixth. Awarere and Ballymoy 11. were still the leading pair at the home turn, where Poganelli, Bright Glow, Valkon, Great Charter, and Lysander r were their closest attendants. The field spread across the course at the distance, and in a wonderful finish In the Shade came through and beat Awarere by half a length. Great Charter was a similar dislance away third, and Nancy Loo close up fourth. Then came Joy King, Yalkon, Bright Glow, and Lysunder. Jn the Shade was: last for the Hist few and finished brilliantly- from a long way back. Awarere ran right up to track form, and just failed. Great Charier w.is always prominent, but Joy King was badly placed early in the race. Nancy Leo, after losing a prominent position early, was running on at the finish. Bright Glow had every chance. The sectional times were: One furlong, l.iscc; two, 24sec; three, 35% sec; four, 47 2-ssec; and the last four 50 4-ssec. GREAT NORTHERN CHAMPAGNE STAKES. Nine started in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Raasay was a good favourite, being about £800 better backed than tho sscond choice, Episode, who had a-good, call over Prince Humphrey. Episode and Freehold were, the quickest to begin, and they led into the-straight, closely followed by Mithra, Prince Humphrey, and Raasay, who were in a bunch. Inside the distance Prince Humphrey challenged Episode, but under pressure Episode went away again and won by nearly two lengths from Prince Humphrey, Freehold was three parts of a length away ■third and Mithra fourth. Then followed Kaasay and Prodice. The winner won entirely on her merits, and is undoubtedly good. Raasay was a bit disappointing, and Staghunter also shaped poorly. MANGERE STEEPLECHASE. For the Mangere Steeplechase Prince Kufus, Wiltshire, and Memsahib were the best backed. Memsahib and Mashoor made play for little over a mile. Then Wiltshire forged to the front, and, going up the hill the second time, he was closely attended by Prince Kufus, Uralla, and Memsahib. Wiltshire was always doing the best in the final stage?, and eventually won easily by five lengths from Uralla, who beat Prince Rufus by a similar marpin. Sea Comet was fourth, followed by Simnlieitas and Memsahib. Wiltshire has regained his confidence as a fencer, and should go a lot further. Uralla made a very promising showing, and will benefit by the experience. ONSLOW STAKES. All started in tho Onslow Stakes, Perception being a good favourite over Gesto and White Wings. Bulolo ran to the front quickly, and led to the straight from Lucy Rose, To Atiaw'a, White Wings, ."lolly Money, Gesto, and Perception. White Wings came through inside the distance and Hcored by a length from Lucy Rose, wlio beat Gesto by three parts of a length. Te Atiawa was fourth, l'ollowrr\ by Perception, Jolly Money, and Bulolo. Perception did not begin smartly omniyh. and was standing the leaders up some lengths at the home turn. White Winga. is much improved. Bulolo showed lots of imce, and Jolly Money also went well. EDEN HANDICAP. The !Edon Handicap was a. great betting race, with Micrometer, Cynthia N., and Liaison most in demand. Ohincmuri rush-

Ed to the front quickly, and at the end of four furlongs was four lengths out from Cynthia N., Dimmer, Liaison, Welcome Home, and Winsome Boy. Ncaring the turn, Ohincmuri increased her lead to eight lengths, and Liaison dropped back. Otherwise the order was unchanged. Nothing could get near Ohineriiuri at the finish, and she won by five lengths from Winsome Boy, who beat Cynthia N. out of second place by a neck. Micrometer finished well in fourth position, and then in order were Dimmer, Cybele, and Liaison.' The winner js a full-sister to Te Monamii. She outpaced the.field and returned double figures.
