The Rev.' Pereival Watson, of Brisbane, has been elected president of the Congregational Union of Australia and New Zealand, in succession to Bey. J. E. James, who has left Australia for England. Mr. and Mrs. H. Bond-James, of the London Missionary Society, who have been stationed at Rarotonga, arrived in Wellington by the Tahiti this morning. They will leave later-for England. Mr. J. M. Reid, London manager of tho Loan and Mercantile Agency; accompanied by Mr. J. W. Brodie and Mr. W. Esson, arrived, by tho Marama today. Sir Donald M'Gavin, Dr. J. S. Elliott, and Mr. Campbell Begg returned to-day by tho Marama from Australia, whero they attended tho meeting of the Australasian Collego of Surgeons at Canberra. Sir Hubert anil Lady Carr, of India, who have been touring the North Island, will leavo Auckland' by the Aorungi to-morrow for Vancouver. Mr. Goorgo Gow, who has been for the past 34 years superintendent of tho Northern Steamship Company, retired from tho company's sorvico as from the beginning of this month. Mr. Gow, who was' at one, time the -only naval architect in Now Zealand, designed and superintended tho construction of many well-known vessols in tho company's fleot. Among tho largest of those for which ho has been responsible aro tho Rarawa, tho Ngapuhi,-tho Apnnui, tho Aupouri, and tho Ngatiawa, all of which wove built on tho Clyde. Among'fc tho Northern-bound passengers by tho Limited express last night, whs Mr. Cecil Rhodes, of the Audit Department, Dunediu, who is leaving Auckland to-morrow by tho R.M.S. Aorangi, on nn extended visit to British Columbia, U.S.A., the Unitod Kingdom, and tho Continent of Europe. Mr. Rhodes is tho youngest son of Mr. T. W. Rhodes, M.P. for Thames. Ho expects to return to tho Dominion towards the end of tho year. Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Rhodes accompanied Mr. Cecil Rhodes to Auckland. The funeral of tho lato Mr. W. Crichton took placo at Karori cemetery on Saturday. A sorvieo was conducted at tho lato residence of tho deceased by tho Rev. E. R. Weeks, who also officiated at tho graveside. Tho chiof mourners were Mrs. Crichton (widow of tho deceased), Mr. Stewart Crichton (brother of tho deceased), Messrs. J. Wilson, F. A. King,' and D. Strachan (brothers-in-law), and Mr. V. Haughton (a business partner of the deceased). The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup), Archdoncon A. M. Johiison, Mr. C. M. Luke, Councillor I*. Meadowcroft, and representatives of local clubs, the Institute of Architects, legal and other professional houses, and the building trades wore also present. Mr. Stewart Crichton and his three sons acted as pall-bparers. Mrs. Crichton has received a largo number of telegrams and letters of condolence from all parts of tho Dominion. Many years of very successful sorvieo in the Now Zealand Polico Force stood to tho credit of Senior-Sergeant William Edward Lewis, who died suddenly at Christchurch on Saturday afternoon following a heart seizure. . Ho entered the police depot at Wellington in 1899, and was appointed a detective in 1908. In 1915, he was appointed a detective-sergeant, his promotion to senior detective following in November, 1921. Subsequently, the late senior sergeant was transferred to Christchurch in the capacity of chief detective. Ho was recently transferred to tho uniform branch as senior-sergeant, pending his promotion to the rank of sub-inspector. His nnino was for many years almost a household word, in Wellington. With tho late Detectivo-Ser-goant A. Andrews, he did brilliant work in this city, principally in connection with cases of houscbrealdng and forgery, lie was identified with many of tho biggest detective cases, covering a period of some twenty-three years. With the present Commissioner .of Polico (Mr. W. B. M'llveney), the deceased was concerned with the Cooper case,, and he was also associated with others! in the Ruahino murder case, which'resulted in the hanging of the young Ger-' man, Rottman. Tho last big case1 which ho handled was tho Burwpod murder case. - Ho leaves a widow and one child.
