SODDEN TRACK

STUDENTS' ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING FINE RUff IN MILE A glance through the records of New Zealand University athletic championship meetings reveals many fine. performances, and the names of athletes who have played a prominent part in the histdry of amateur athletics in the Dominion. Men such as B. Opie, F. W. B. Goodbehere (who, when at Wellington College was also an outstanding athlete), W. H. Moycs, A. Hudson, and a number of others have registered fine achievements on the track. Then, in more recent years thero have been A. B. Porritt, L. A.' Tracy, and M. Leadbetter —all men who have distinguished themselves and whose performances are well known. There is no doubt the University has played a big part in the Dominion's athletics, and, in fact, is still doing so. Many notable athletes are attending the four University Colleges in the Dominion this year, and to-day a number of them are engaged in the University championships at.the Basin Resorvo, endeavouring to place their respective colleges at tire top. When a start was mado this morning conditions were v.cry unfavourable. Light rain was falling, and the track was in a very sodden condition. In spite of these handicaps, however, competition was very keen, and there was evidence that the high standard of performance set in the past would be maintained. F t our championships and the heats in the 220 yards event were decided this morning, and tho points scored by tho four colleges are: —Auckland 2, Canterbury 4, Otago 2, Victoria College 4. Considering the conditions, an excellent performance was put up by B, B. E. Taylor (Canterbury1 College) in winning the one mile championship in 4min 29 2-ssec—time which is 2 3-ssec outside tho record established by A. D. Priestley (Victoria College) last year. Taylor, who is a prominent athlete m Canterbury, used good judgment, and boat Priestley, who set a solid pace into tho last lap, by 30 yards. F. S. Ramson (Victoria College), Now Zealand record holder and joint holder with F. Nesdalo of the Australian and New Zealand 440 yards hurdles title, scored a good win in the 440 hurdles championship, defeating A. H. Malcolm (Otago) in 59 3-ssec. ■ The Now Zealand sprint champion, M. Leadbetter (Canterbury) was a competitor in tho 220 yards championship, arid won his heat with ease in 23 3-5 sec. Similar timo was recorded by K. Couper (Auckland), who also had uo I difficulty in securing first place in tho first heat. Two All Blacks, G. T. Alley (Canterbury) and D, F. Lindsay (Otago) took part in tho putting the shot champion-, ship, and were placed first and second respectively. Tho conditions were about as unfavourable as they could bo for competitors in tho long jump, but, nevertheless, the performances were quite good, the three placed men all doing ovor 20ft.
