FOXTON SHOPS BURNT

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMEKSTON N., This Day. At about 2.30 this morning a, fire broke out in a wooden building in the business area of Foxton, two shops being gutted. Only the splendid work of the brigade prevented a serious conflagration, as wooden buildings adjoined on both sides. The outbreak evidently occurred in the Majestic Restaurant, occupied by Mr. Fletcher, and spread to Mr. E. Desmond's confectionery and marble bar in the same building, which was owned by Mr. Claud Spcirs. When the alarm was given the. fire had a strong hold, and was threatening the adjacent shops—Mr. Hamer's fancy goods store on one side and Mr. Mantell's (bootmaker) on the other. But the efficiency of the brigade, assisted by the splendid water supply, confined the outbreak within the wooden walls of Speirs's premises—a rather remarkable feat. Tho only insurance available to-day was the risk of £400 on Mr. Desmond's stock and plant.
