£1000-A-YEAR ORGANIST
The recent ' announcement of an increase in the salary of the organist at AVestminster Abbey has been received with considerable satisfaction by EngIsh organists, considerable discussion having taken place recently on the small salaries paid them. The salary paid to the previous Organist was £500 a year, but Dr. Bullock, the new s organist, will receive £1000 a year. Dr. Foxley Norris, the dean of Westminster, said that organists' salaries generally were too low, but "that will no longer be a chargoiagainst Westminster Abbey." A recently advertisement in an English paper applied for an organist at £35 a year, and tho lead now given by the abbey will we welcomed in musical circles. '
There is a lako near Batliealoa, on the East Coast o£ Ceylon, famous for its singing fish. The music heard oil the surface of the water is said to be caused by the opening and closing of the shells of biynlvßS. Emerson-Tennant mentions the instance in his famous book on Ceylon.
