The Australian national games carnival, held preliminary to the choosing of the Olympic competitors, commenced ni Manly Oval yesterday. All the leading Australian athletes are competing. Cnrlton, who only landed from the New Zealand steamer this morning, won the 100 metres in llsec. In the running high jump L. Mason (Victoria) created a new State record, clearing 6ft 2in, defeating Davidson, the Australian and New Zealand title-holder. Others winners were: 110 metres hurdles, A; Watson (Victoria), 16sec. Throwing the javelin, 0. Millgate (New South Wales), 146 ft 3in. Two hundi'ed metres, A. Walker (New South Wales), 22 3-sscc. Fifteen hundred metres, J. Martin (New South Wales), 4min 20 2-ssec. Eight hundred metres), C. Stuart (New South Wales), 2nrin fisec. .Running broad jump, C. Herbert (New South Wales), 22ft. Hop. step and jump: C. JZbert, 45ft lin, beat Winter, holder of the world's record, who was out of form, by an inch. , In the women's events Miss Winter won the running high. jump, clearing 4ft 7in, establishing a State record. Miss E. Robinson won the hundred metres in 13 1-5 sec. In the cycling events the thousand metres was won by J. Standen (New South Wales) in lmin 10 2-5 sec. Mile junior championship of Australia, L. Standen, 2min 17sec. Mile senior championship, D. Gray and R. W. Lamb, 2miu 13sec. J. Standen finished first, but was disqualified owing to alleged interference with Gray. Senior five miles championship, J. Standeu, 12min 24 2-ssec.
