HUTT VALLEY TOURNEY
The final of the Hutt "Valley bowling tournament was played on the Hutt Club's green on Saturday afternoon, under, most pleasant conditions. Twelve out of the seventeen city and suburban clubs were represented at the tournament, and the arrangements were so made that play ran along to the satisfaction of everyone. •Much of tlie credit for the success of the tournament must go to the secretary, Mr. I<\ Walton. The result of the final game was:—Newtown: Davis, Claridge, Parkhouse, Levcstam (s.), 24; Petone: Comctti, Blake, Laurie, Doneghue (s.), 15. In the earlier stages of the tournament the two rinks had met in a splendid game, Doneghuc's rink winning in an uphill right by a single point. Naturally this added to the interest of Saturday's meeting, quite a number being of the opinion that the Petone rink would repeat the performance. That, however, was not so. The Newtown bowlers sent down a trifle more consistently, and their skip played with excellent judgment. On the seventeenth head the game was well in favour of Newtown, 10-12. On the next head, however, Blake, Laurie, and Doneglrae got in three shots after the jack had been shifted by Parkhouse, four points of difference and three heads to go. Levestain's rink went on to a six-point lead in the next head. The twentieth bend was a long one, and the bowls were well away from the jack. Again Levcstam drew the shot in great style. The last head was particularly interesting. Davis put down two good shots, but lSliiko rested out the shot, a performance which Parkhouse repeated. Doneghue then essayed to kill the head, and drove the jack nearly out to the boundary, but still Newtown lay, so with his next he hit it again and Bent it into the ditch, where Newtown finally lay two shots —both of them Levestatn's bowls. This gave a 24-15 victory to the Newtown rink. The trophy was presented, amidst hearty applause, to the Newtown rink by tlic umpire, Mr. Pawson, of the Central Club.
