AUCKLAND COLTS V. MANAWATU VISITORS SCORE FREELY (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) I'ALMERSTON N., This Day. Conditions were ideal lor the commencement of the Manawatu-Auckland Colts game oil Saturday. This well-known Auckland, touring eleven under the management of Mr. X C. Beale is a strong side tins year, including J. Langridge, the Sussex County pUiyci- and Auckland professional. The wicket was fast and the outfield in splendid order. Manawalu batted first, putting up 198 in their first strike. The majority of the wickets fell very cheaply, only three men making solid scores. The brightest partnership of the innings came from Fletcher (41 not out) and Didsbury (42), who saved the side from a two-figure score. If the innings did nothing else, it demonstrated that tho "tail" of the Manawatu side, like that of the kangaroo, is its strongest part. The Manawatu .skipper (Mulling) also gave a very pretty exhibition for his 43, while Spring and M'Vicar looked like putting up The Aucklanders had about two hours' batting in the afternoon Whitelaw in particular giving a very finished display He luis a wide variety of strokes and never at any time appeared to be troubled by the bowling. As he approached his century, however, he became very cautious, so much so that his score stood at 99 when stumps were drawn. The surprise of the day was the prompt dismissal of Langridge, who was smartly taken in the long field by Black after lasting a couple of overs. Butler gave a fine display, being given out Ibw just before the conclusion of tho day's play. The visitors treated the Manawatu bowling liarshly, as can be judged' from the fact that their score was only 10 behind the Manawatu total -when stumps were drawn with four wickets down. The Auckland bowling kept the home score down, but an even greater factor was their smart fielding. Fraser got an excellent average of four wickets for 28. He has a tricky swerve which proved dangerous. MANAWATU. First Innings. M'Sweency, c.
