The above illustration is of the Atlantic Refining Company's new 12,500-ton Diesel electric tanker which is at present being built in England. While progress in the adoption of the electric drive in ships has been slow in England, the system has become fully established in the United States. It is, perhaps, in the American naval vessels that the electric drive finds its greatest application, the latest examples being the aircraft carriers Saratoga and Lexington. The vessels are 850 ft long, and the propelling machinery develops 180,000 s.h.p., giving the ships a speed of 34/2 knots.
