MAN AND BOY DROWNED
SWEPT OFF BY WANGAXUI itfVEE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, This Day. A double drowning tragedy occurred in the Wanganui River this afternoon. The victims were:— Claudo Mulvaney, married, of Auckland, a visitor to Wanganui. Howard Bernard Loft, aged nine years. Mr. JJ-ulvancy and his wife and Mrs. Loft and her family were picnicking on tho river bank about two miles above tho Aramoho bridge, early in the afternoon. Four of the Loft children went into the river to bathe and almost immediately Howard Loft got into difficulties. Mr. Mulvaney, although he could not swim, gallantly went fully clothed into the river in an endeavour to save the lad. Both wore swept away by the current and drowned. At the same time two of the other children got into difficulties, but Mrs. Mulvaney managed to get them out. The. bodies were recovered later by tho police. Tho boy was found tightly clasped in Mulvaney's arms.
