COLD NIGHT PREDICTED
BAROMETER HIGH
As indicated yesterday the weather has gradually improved, and, although still a little cold, it is much more agreeable than during the' past few days. An intense anti-cyclone (highr pressure region) has enveloped New Zealand, and this morning several places on the East Coast of the South Island reported barometric readings of over 30.5 in. Except in the western districts, where it* has been fair, the weather has been cold and changeable generally, and squally, with showers, along the East Coast. The southerly winds, however, have decreased in strength since last night, and conditions this morning generaly showed an improvement, although Gisborne and Akaroa lighthouse reported squally weather at 9 a.m. The weather was also still somewhat cloudy elsewhere on the East Coast. " Generally fair to fine weather' is now exxpected, with a cold night and frosts inland. Southerly winds will give place to more variable winds for a time, while northerlies are likely to prevail an increase later.
