OPENING OF SEASON

The weather could hardly have been improved upon to-day for the first meeting of the season of the Wellington Trotting Club. These Saturday's fixtures are a proved success, and to-day's gathering has attracted a large number of visitors from the South, the arrivals this morning being especially numerous. The class of horse engaged indicates in no uncertain manner the progress made by the club during the last two years, and the bumper attendance at Hutt Park to-day was provided with some really good racing. The track was in very fair order. Following are the details of the racing up to the time of going to press:— NOVICE HANDICAP (harness), of 125 soys; second 20 boys, and third horse 10 soys from the stake; 3.45 class. Great Eyre, Jean M'Elwyn, Golden Morn, Trumpeter, and SailorBoy began best, and this was the order of the leaders for a mile. Daphne De Oro then ran up handy and Jean M'Elwyn took charge. Daphne De Oro stuck on and wore down Jean M'Elwyn, winning by half a length. Wakefield j was five lengths behind, and then were Great Eyre, Sadie Huon, and Golden Morn. Cannonball and Katuto followed Lady Fan into the straight, and, Little Johnnie, coming again, beat Lady Fan by a length and a half, with Cannonball two longths away third. Therowas little real change until five furlongs from home, wlion Hoon Hay just led Marshal Neil and tho rest, except Moneyspider, bunched. Marshal Noil had charge a furlong from home with William the Great and Hoon Hay' and Menember challenging. In a I great finish the first four horses went across • tho line together, Moneyspider coming with a marvellous run on tho outside to win by a neck from Menember, with Marshal Neil a neck away third, a head in front of William tho Great.
