LEVEL CROSSING SMASH
OPENING OF INQUEST

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An inquest was opened at Kirwee yesterday concerning the death of Henry George Weir, who was killed outright in the level crossing smash on Thursday. •,
Mr. Smith, who employed both Weir and Stewart, said that the men left in the car ownod a~d driven by, Stewart. They were to go to Kirwe'e to load coal and afterwards go to work at Courtcnay.
Dr. D. M'Millan said that Weir sustained a fractured skull and lacera. tion of the brain. Death would bo in stantanoous. ■ ' ■.'... ;
The inquest was adjourned sine die. The driver of the Greymouth-Christ-church express states that tho car seemed to shoot right across tho track of tho engine.
Web-, who was chairman of the Kirwee School Committee, leaves a wife and three children, ono of whom was born the day before the fatality. Arthur Lionel Stewart, the driver of the car, is reported by tho hospital authorities to be improving yesterday. He is not now on tho seriously ill list, though ho is badly injured.
