MARIST WIN EASILY.
Marisfc will represent Wellington-in the Chatham Cup competition. They established that right at the Basin Reserve on" Saturday by defeating V.M.C.A. by the big margin of 8 goals to nil. From the start of the match until the final ■whistle there was only one team in the picture, but it was not until the final half that the winners began to pile on the goals. The score at half-time was 2 to nil, but in the second session Marist scored almost ai will.
V.M.C.A. won the toss, and they were, the first away, Hickey being called upon to save from a rush by Rigby and Lack:-. Following this, Marist forwards were seen in a nice piece of combined play. The ball was sent out to Barton, and this player, who seems to be recovering all his old form, made no mistake with the shot from a difficult angle. Marist maintained th pressure from the kick-off, and some nice combined play ended in M'Elligott surprising Jficollc, the V.M.C.A. custodian, with a fast shot from well out. Nicolle failed to hold the leather. Two down, V.M.C.A. settled, down to stem the light-, aing attacks of the fast-moving forwards, and for a time they succeeded. Marist were placed on the defence for a time, and during this period Ballard just missed with a shot, the_ ball skimming the - crdss;bar.' Don also missed a great chance of scoring. Marist attacked again, and.for a tifne tbeyr kept hammering away at the Y.M.G.A. deiences, which managed to stand up to the' onslaught. Condon, Barton, and Marshment all had shots at goal, but missed narrowly.
Early in the second spell, V.M.C.A. settled down to business, and for the first five minutes or so they kept Marist' busy. Ballard shot from the side-line, and the ball landed on top of the net. J.t was k close call for Marist. From the resulting: goal-kick, Marist went a\yay on the left wing, and Cudby sent into' the centre. Nicolle rushed forward to clear, but missticked,, and the ball trickled into the net, a lucky goal. Marist 3, V.M.C.A. 0. From this stage on, Marist had matters all their own way, and kept up a strong attack on the V.M.C.A. goal almost without intermission. Barton scored with a great left-foot shot from a good distance out, and a few minutes later Cudby was through as the result of a great solo rush. Play had not been in progress ver-y long when a Bice centre from Barton saw Marshment score a good goal. Barton was again prominent a.few minutes later, and ran through nicely to score his third goal, a fine solo effort. This made the score 7 to nil against V.M.C.A., but it was not all over yet. Just bcrore the end Marist broke away again, and Marshment was successful in scoring the eighth goal for his side. V.M.C.A. made strenu- , cue efforts to break their duck, but the ilanst defences held out until the end and the ; game ended: Marist S, Y.JI.G.A; 0. Mr. &. Jackson was the referee. • :
