LONDON, 22nd August,
A Milan correspondent states that preparations for an attack on Mount Everest, which have been proceeding since the British failures, have been almost completed. ' ' *
Signor Belloni, the president of the Milan Alpine Club, is now approaching the Government to authorise the expedition which the city of Milan ig financing.
Italian alpinists believe that Mallory's and Irvine's deaths, when ascending the summit of Mount 1 Everest, constitute, no proof of the impracticability of scaling Mount Everest, but a more judicious placing of the base camps is necessary. If the Tibetan authorities persist in their recent attitude not to allow white people to proceed to Mount Everest, owing to Tibetan veneration for the peak, the expedition will attack ?' rount Godwin-Austen, 28,265 ft, whereby they would be able to beat Mallory's record.
Mount Godwin-Austen is the highest known summit in the world except Mount Everest, its altitude being 28,265 ft. It is situated about 800 miles northwest of Mount Everest, in the Himalayan chain, and its name was given to it by the Eoyal Geographical Society in 1888.
