EARLIER MESSAGES

WHOLE COUNTRY DIVIDED

' NEW. YORK, 21st August. The Saeco-Vanzetti case continues hourly to gain in dramatic : interest. Mr. Justice Brandeis, the United States Supremo Court Judge, who is known for his liberal views, was petitioned to grant a reprieve, but declined, on the ground that it would not be ethical, because his family has interested itself in the condemned man. Miss Jane Adams, America's most noted feminist, will now appeal to Mr. Justice Stone, of the Supreme Court, on behalf of the condemned men. The whole country seems/to be divided into two camps—those who are striving to secure another hearing, and those who believe the men guilty. Sacco, writing to his son, says: "They can crucify our bodies, as they are doing, but they cannot destroy our ideas. These will remain for the youth of the future to, come."

A report from Boston states that Senator Borah has offered his services to the Citizens' National Committee, which is conducting the defence of the condemned men.

The Acting United States AttorneyGeneral, Mr. Farnum, to-day announced that ho could not let counsel for the

condemned men examine the files of the Department of Justice, but if Governor_ Fuller or his advisory council so desired, they would be given immediate access. An appeal, therefore, has been made to Governor Fuller for a delay of execution, and an examination of t"° ,re« ords, which, it is claimed,: show that iederal secret service operatives expressed the belief that Saceo and Vanzetti did not participate in the Bramtree murder.
