there_ were some people who took a certain amount of delight in bringing forward general statements which very often it was not possible to disprove because they did not have the actual facts to show what the position was. It would be difficult; for him at the moment to supply the exact figures, but he could only say that it was entirely wrong to say that hundreds of men werg walking oft" the land. He would be glad to look into the position and obtain information which would make it possible for him tomeet the general statement with facts. FINANCE BILI. INTRODUCED. ' The Finance Bill was introduced by Governor-General's Message. In reply to a question by Mr. G. W. Forbes (Hurunui) the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart) stated that the clauses were largely machinery' provisions dealing, with departmental matters and slight amendments to' loan authorities. Amongst •other things he said, it was proposed to confer funds to the Forestry Department to enable it to expend monies in connection with unemployment, and to confer funds to the el.ectrie supply account in regard to the carrying on of further works. Provision was also contained giving the Public Trustee power to invest in electric power' board securities. There were also certain authorisations in regard to the Post Office. At present there was only power to issue post office certificates for five years, and it was proposed to take power to issne them for shorter periods of one, two, and five years. A voice: "What interest?" The Minister said they were com-' pounded at 4J, 5, and 5| per cent., placing the Post Office in the same position as the banks. • : (Proceeding.) .
