WANGANUI COUNCIL

WANGANTO, oth August. At the City Council meeting this evening, Councillor J. Siddells, leader of the Uty Progressive Party, who was challenged by Mr. J. Coull at an indignation meeting to resign, and who E(.fc the last council meeting voted,against the party to retain the engineer,: made an explanation that in view of the numerous requests to carry on, ho had decided not to resign. He intimated that several economies were necessary, and that lie would do his best to see that these were carried out. The -Mayor moved a notice of motion that a committee be set up to consider anomalies m regard to salary cuts in respect to certain members o£ the council staff and report. He pointed out that the council had already considered the salaries of two servants, the city gardener included, and had made adjustments. On the motion being lost on the voices, the Mayor said he felt sure councillors would regret it.
