PROTEST MEETINGS
THOUSANDS OF POLICE USED
(Received 10th August, 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, 9th August. In the meanwhile Washington State Department officials have taken extraordinary precautions against possible bombings. Six entrances to the Department building have, been barred, leaving only two open, which were placed under a heavy guard. Special guards also have been stationed at the entrances to the private residences of diplomats.
Thousands of New York police were concentrated on thirty protest meetings which were scheduled to assemble at a monster gathering later in the day. It is claimed that 145,000 workers are out on a sympathetic strike. A thousand policemen have been posted in Union squire, and smaller detachments throughout the city to preserve order.
Pour thousand clothing workers at Rochester, New York, are out.
