FAMINE EVERYWHERE
LOOTING THE MISSIONS
WHOLE TOWNS BURNED
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, Bth August.
A group of missionaries, mostly American Catholic fathers and sisters, arrived here after four months' arduous trek on mules and sedan chairs, from the wildest part of Central China, following the exodus from Kweichow. Two sisters died from exhaustion cv route.
The party reports indescribable devastation and ravages by soldiers and bandits, with famine everywhere. Complete towns were burned by bandits, the inhabitants fleeing to all parts of the country where they are starving. Missions were burned and looted and travellers hold up by bandits and stripped of their valuables and belongings. The party witnessed the looting of the mission at Shen Chow-fu, the Chinese students' political bureau auctioning the mission property in the streets. This was followed by the burning of the mission school. They declare that mission work in Kweichow province is completely ruined.
