RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP

QUESTION OF CLOSURE

The question whether, in the event of Old Boys defeating Athletic on Saturday, the senior A championship should be closed and nominations invited for the National Mutual Life Challege Cup was discussed at last evening's meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union. If was agreed that members of the committee should meet on Saturday:evening after the match to consider the position.

Mr. H. Murphy said he thought they should hang the matter up. Except in tlie case of a draw, the championship would practically decide itself on Saturday. I£ Old Boys W6n -they .should have ,the Mutual Life Cup game to.follow, and they: would set a really good gate. Mr. J. Prendeyille said it seemed to him that, in the event of Athletic winning they should play Marist, and Old Boys should play the winner of the Poneke-Pe-tone match, with the other fixtures to be arranged.

Mr. J. King thought the matter should be decided next week. . .

Mr. W. J. Hardham: "We want to have something so that we can push for the cup match, if we do not-want to go on."

Mr. Jackson considered that if Old Boys won on Saturday the championship should be closed, and nominations called immediately for the Mutual Cup.

Professor Boyd-Wilson suggested that if Athletic won a special meeting of the committee should be held on Saturday night.

Mr. Jackson: "I think the general trouble is that we haven't enough Saturdays to go round." Mr. Murphy said it might be possible to get a match between Poneke and Old Boys on a Wednesday. He contended that club games should take precedence over representative fixtures. On one occasion he remembered players had been recalled from a representative touring team to take part in club championship games, and, if necessary, that could be done again. Eventually it was decided that a meeting of the committee be held on Saturday evening, irrespective ■ of- whether Old Boys won or not; .
