AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEXT PROVINCIAL MEETING

A meeting of the "Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, held last evening, was presided over by Mr. A. .C. Kitto. The Masterton Harrier Club asked that a list of the principal events for harriers be arranged at the commencement of the ' arrier season, with the approximate dates of the same. A request was also made that reasonable notice be given to all harrier clubs concerned when the actual dates for forthcoming events were decided npon. It was considered that if this were carried out there would be no confusion as to dates, and clubs that were concerned in important events would have plenty of time to prepare for them. In view of the fact that the New Zealand championships and the Australian and New Zealand championships are to be held in Christchurch and Wellington respectively in December, it was decided that the Wellington provincial championships be held after the New Year. Athletes in the other districts in the province would receive consideration in the selection of the Wellington team for the New Zealand meeting, as any who showed promise would be brought to Wellington and tried out at some of the electric light meetings. It was mentioned that it would be necessary for the members of the various clubs to commence training earlier than usual in view of the big and important events to be decided. Some events ■would be staged on 17th September, the date of the Palinerston ?~orth-Wel lington road cycle race, provided th,e Basin Reserve was available. An application had been made for the use of the ground, but so far no reply had been received from the City Council. The Port Nicholson Road Cycling Club was given permission to conduct a 50 miles Wellington provincial cycling championship on 3rd September. The cyclist registering fastest time will be sent by the centre to represent Wellington in the New Zealand amateur road championship, to be held at Auckland on 10th September.

Entries for the Palmerston North to Wellington cycle race arc to close on 6th September, and Messrs. A. C. Kitto and 6. Harrison were appointed handieappers for the race.

It was decided to inform harrier clubs that all competitors must wear their club colours when running in the Bennett Memorial Cup race. Mr. J. Finn has been appointed as delegate of the Nelson Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club,- and Mr. F. de Malmanche as the Motuelca Club's delegate on the centre.
