MAYOR'S !ETOD Smt
If, as the Mayor recently stated, the unemployment position in Wellington is the worst for twenty years, .the position is better vastly by the very extensive relief works which the council, with the assistance of citizens, haa fortunately been able to set under way. Probably few people realise that it is going to cost the council—which means the city as a whole —and the Government, in subsidies, a sum of almost £70,000 to meet, or at least to endeavour to meet, this winter's problem. The city's relief works, some of which are still to be commenced, are as follow:— UNDER £10,000 LOAN. Grafton road improvements ...... £7000 Sandhill levelling, etc. £3000 £10,000 In addition a sum of about £3500, built up from royalties on sand taken from Rongotai for paving purposes, will be available for work on the sandhill area. £4000 LOAN; Completion of Horn- . sey road ........ £4000 £26,000 LOAN. Point Halswell road £14,904 Glenmore street ... £17,524 Nairnville Park.... £8000, £40,428 (The difference between the £26,----000 of the loan and the £40,428 total is accounted for by the Government subsidy.) ; MAYOR'S BELIES 1 Flfti-D. Western Park £5000 Gorse grubbing - - and tree planting £4000 . Deviation of main road, Wadestown. 4&20OO Sandhills road to Lyall Bay from Rongotai ■ £2000 Improvements Ngaio road £1000 Improvements Happy Valley road ' £ 850 Croquet lawn, Pirie street £300 Improvements Palliser road , £1000 . £13,150 (Here again the Government subsidy, £ for £, swells the money contributed by citizens.) R.S.A. FUNDS. Nairnville Park.... £650 (The subsidy on this amount is being applied to the sandhill work at ROll2O--tai.) 6 The grand total is £68,228, but the precise amount of the Government subsidy cannot be determined until a later stage in the works done out of loan moneys. . .
