SHOTOVER DREDGING.
An extraordinary meeting of the Shotover Dredging Company,- N.L., New Zealand, is to be held in Melbourne to-inor- , row week io authorise the directors to give [ a .mortgage ove> the whole or part of the property for any liability incurred. Negotiations are in progress for an amalgamation with the Shotover Consolidated Comj pany. This company has leases embracing 9% miles of the Shotover River, against :4% miles held by the Melbourne company. The New Zealand opinion inclines to the view that the suction cutter dredge will not operate satisfactorily, and should be replaced by a bucket dredge. Directors of the Shotover Dredging Company hold, " however, that as the dredge was launched in a wide part of the river, difficulty has been experienced in reaching the wash • where the gold exists owing to frequent floods causing silt trouble. The dredge, they contend, should have another trial before being condemned, preferably where the river is narrower and there is less likelihood of silt trouble.
