FEES INCREASED

FAVOURED BY BOARD

LEGISLATION TO BE SOUGHT

The City and Suburban Highways Board to-day again discussed the proposal that motorists in tho Wellington area should be called upon to pay an increased Hutt Toad fee to enable the board to raise a further loan of £100,----000, making £300,000 in all. After a considerable discussion, it was resolved that the proposals to widen the Hutt road surface and to recondition the cycle track from Thorndon to Petone, works estimated to cost £30,000, should be deleted from the programme of works.

A resolution was passed to the effect that the board should proceed with its Bill in respect of the £100,000 loan and should seek the necessary legislation to enable it to increase the fees payable by owner* of cars by 10s and motor-cycles by 3s 4d. The vote of motorists which was to have been promoted by the board will not be proceeded with.

Objection was taken tc a clause in the Bill in respect of the drawing up of regulations for the control of traffic by the board. It was finally resolved that, the clause should be amended to the effect that such regulations should be drawn up by the board, subject to the consent of the local bodies concerned.

.The final resolution aims at the exemption of owners of motor vehicles I of the Whareroa, Taupo, and Horokiwi ridings of the HuttCounty from liability in respect of the increase in fees, as it was claimed that these owners received little, if any, benefit from the scheme.
