A STREET DAY

HELP THE ORPHANS

The Wellington. City Council lias granted permission for a Bti'eet day for St. Joseph's 'Orphanage and has fixed the date for next Friday. A committee of ladies has beon preparing for this event for the past three months, and is leaving no stono unturned to make it a success.

Over 300 children■■find a home at St, Joseph's Orphanage at Upper Hu'tt, and tliG Sisters of Mercy find it most difficult to feed and clothe such a large number, and could not possibly do it ■without the generosity of the public. St. Joseph's Orphanage has no endowments or regular income to draw upon, and every penny, with the exception of a very small percentage received towards the support of a few of the children, is obtained by voluntary efforts. Originally the orphanage was located at Guildford terrace, but its growth necessitated the acquisition of a large area of land at Upper Hiitt, and erecting the present building. This involved a considerable outlay, and there remains a large debt on the property. Trado depression has its effect on the orphanage as the scarcity of money less6ns the subscriptions and increases tho admissions^ The Sisters of .Mercy sacrifice their lives, without thought of fee or material reward for the care of the orphan, and all that they require is the means to carry on their work, as the result of which many former inmates are occupying good positions. Friday will be an opportunity for the public of Wellington to show their practical sympathy and support to this institution. The following are the street stalls and the names of the ladies in charge of each:—• Quinton's Corner; Mrs. Gibbs; Kirkcaldie's Corner, Mrs. Thrower; Boulcott street, Mrs: Quinn; Bank of New Zealand .(Stewart Dawson's), Mrs. Myers; Bank of Hew Zealand (Lower Cuba street),: Mrs. J.
