ROSENEATH IMPROVEMENTS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Might I trespass on your apace to ventilate the urgent needs of Hoseneath The ratepayers and residents of this district have for some time past put up with considerable-inconvenience and discomfort and I think it is time tho City Council made a real endeavour to remove the grounds for complaint from this part of the city. The following matters require prompt and urgent attention. As criticism ip. bo fair should be-, constructive in character, I shall enumerate Die matters that can be remedied.

Transport.—Access hy iueans of buses is the result of. a definite promise made to the district when the. lift, scheme was abandoned. Par from the bus sorvico being improved, the very opposite has taken place, and improvements along the following lines are necessary; Firstly, buses should have destination signs of a permanent nature on the sides and rear and indication numbers : like - tho tramcars. becondly, a limited Sunday and holiday service should be provided. Thirdly, an evening service should , be inaugurated. We have a Friday night service, but buses should run every evening, two trips to. the city between;-7.15 p.m. and 7.45 p.m. and Wo return trips to Roseneath between 10.15 p.m.. and 10.45 p.m. Ihe trirfs would pay. Fourthly, the present 4.30 p.m. arid 5.30 p.m. buses should start from the P.O. Square. The business mans only bus at present is the 5.5 bus, and if he misses that he' has a wait of one hour. ■ The hour of 5.5 is inconvenient for every man not within easy walking distance of the G.P.O. Rather than wait for the 6.5 bus, business and working men prefer to climb the hill from the Oriental Bay car route. Now, Sir, it is obvious that buses from P.O. Square at 4.30 aud 5.30 would relieve the present crowding on the 5.5 bus as well. The bus service to Roseneath can be made to pay, if it does not at present, by improvements in the directions indicated, and not only would the residents benefit but also the service would receive greater patronage. Let the City Council do Svhat private enterprise would give without the asking —that ib all that .is wanted.

Lighting—At night, '-' and especially when the moon has not "raised her lamp," Grafton road and the Crescent are a positive horror. Extra street lighting lamps are an urgent need.

Footpaths and Roads.—Much has been written and eo,id about ■ these in Roseneath,, but the bad- state of same is allowed to go on. It is.to.behoped that the lower or city cud of Graf ton road,%vill receive early attention, perhaps per medium.o£ the unemployment fund. And yet a more urgent, need is attention to the footpaths. An .uneven footpath (full of holes) with clay surface, a shower of rain, and at night dimly lighted, and residents walk on it at risk of neck and limb. The work was commenced months ago and left unfinished, and an unfinished job is oft-times worse than one not tackled at all. At any rate, that is the case in Grafton road. ' ■-.-.. )

J- a closing, 'there is a direction post— To Roseneath"—in the reserve at the entrance to Lindum ten-ace . that badly needs a coat of paint and fresh siimwriting: An inexpensive item o£ maintenance, but a necessary, one. May we see at the council meeting on Thursday of this week some attention directed to the several matters indicated above. I am, etc..
