THE NEW COLLEGE

MEMORIAL TO MR. MASSEY

BILL BEADY FOR HOUSE

After much controversy and the passage of partial legislation on the subject last session, the way is now clear for tho introduction of a Bil! dealing with the establishment of tho Agricultural College and denning the status of Lincoln College in Canterbury. The Bill may be brought in to-day.

An interesting feature of the compromise which has been effected iv regard to the conflicting interests is that the name of the institution, which will embody Lincoln College within it 3 scope, will be the Massey Agricultural College. Under the new arrangement Lincoln College will probably retain its own form of government, but as the Board of Governors will undertake certain duties to enable the general scheme to function properly, the college wiil be given equal status with the institution at Palmerston North, which is the centre for instruction in dairying. In the past complaints have been frequent that lack of finance and apparatus have hampered the work which Lincoln College is capable of doing, but under the new scheme Lincoln will participate in the annual grants for agricultural University education, and also in the way of grants for capital expenditure needed to improvj buildings and equipment. It will rank with the other University Colleges in the matter of being entitled to Government subsidies on bequests made to it.
