OBITUARY
The death occurred yesterday at his residence at ITcrctaunga of Mr. David Brown Howden, at the ago of 81. The lato Mr. Howden was born in Edinburgh, and educated at tho Edinburgh Academy. He came out to Now Zealand in 1873, and joined tho service of the Colonial lia.nk when it first started. Afterwards ho joined tho staff of tho Bank of New South Wales at Christchureh. Later Mr. Howden eamo to Wellington and went into business with his brother iv tho Wellington Biscuit Company, iv which ho continued until they sold out some eighteen years ago, when he went into retirement at Horotaunga. While there were other golfers in New Zealand when tho Howden brothers arrived, they were amongst tho first to do more than talk about tho game both had played in Scotland. Mr. P. R. Howdon was one oi' the first to rouse interest in tho game in Dunedin, when tho old Mornington links were started there, and tho l»te Mr. D. B. Howden was ono of the xounders of tho Hutt Golf Club on tho Waiwetu, whore tho present racecourse is, and whero tho first golf was played in tho North Island. Mr. D. B. Howden was also the originator of the Now Zealand Golf Council, in collaboration with Mr. Wilder (Christehurcli). Ho was a foundation member of the Wellington Golf Club at Heretaunga, and took a keen interest in the game until very recently. Tho lato Mr. Howdon leaves a widow and two daughters—tho Misses Howden, of Heretaunga—and two sons —Mr. D. O. L. Howden, of tho Bank of Now Zealand, Marton, and Mr. C. R. Howden, of the Goar Meat Company, Wellington.
