A HELPING HAND

Air. W. T. Strand, Mayor of Lower Butt, reported to his council last evening that a committee of citizens representative of all denominations had taken in hand the matter of investigating cases where help was needed. Ho could now say that arrangements had been rnado to provide work for every capable and worthy person in the borough. Having fully met all the cases of unemployment in the borough, it had been decided to assist first a certain number from the adjoining borough of Petone. To that end the Petone committee had been asked on Saturday to send up thirty men, who would be paid relief wages, but only one man had offered. The same offer had been repeated on Monday, but only two had responded. The offer would hold good till Tuesday, but after that married men from Wellington would be given preference.

In regard to opening subscription lists in the 'borough he desired it to be known that any voluntary subscriptions would bo gladly received and acknowledged. Many had already responded, but he did not intend to commence a begging campaign, as he realised that many residents had already contributed generously to the Wellington fund, where perhaps it was moro needed. Councillor Hobbs said many people ivory finding work for men in their gardens, and the Mayor said he realised that, and was sure the council appreciated highly what residents had done in this way.
