PETONE COUNCIL OPPOSES
Last night the Petone Borough Council received a copy of the minutes of the meeting of the City and Suburbau Highways Board, including the decision to ask motorists to contribute 10a more per year towards the upkeep of the Hntt road, and that it had been ueeided to widen the road. The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzic) said he had opposed the scheme because it was a case of squandering public money, and also because of the danger to horses. Councillor Jacobson: "Why not tarseal it so as to give the horses a footing?" The Mayor: "Because they want to dp the whole width in bitumen, and also either scheme would cost a lot of money." The council decided to oppose the board's proposals.
