PILGRIMAGE TO YPRES
ATTENDANCE OF 15,000
MESSAGE OF THE KING
(United Prsss Association.—Copyright.! LONDON, 24th July. It is estimated that 15,000 attended the unveiling of the Ypres Memorial, many having spent the night in the open air, owing to the limited accommodation. A special enclosure was reserved for 700 pilgrims from Britain, as well as hundreds of ex-servicemen who saw fighting in this salient. The surrounding buildings were ablaze with British and Belgian flags. King George sent a message to King Albert, reading: "My people's hearts are touched that you should thus attend personally and honour the British Empire's missing, who made' the supreme sacrifice in the immortal defence of the salient."
King Albert replied: "I considered it my duty to render homage to the incomparable defenders of Ypres."
